Natural Remedies for Cleansing the Colon

Colon cleanses have gained popularity in recent years as a means to eliminate toxins from the body and possibly avoid colon cancer. While you may appreciate the purported benefits of colon cleanses, you might feel apprehensive about visiting your doctor to have a colon cleanse performed. Fortunately, there are several natural colon cleanse remedies you can use at home.

Psyllium

Few people have heard of psyllium, but this herb has been used as a laxative and colon cleanser for centuries. Today, it is used in fiber supplements to promote regular bowel movements. It is also thought to protect the lining of the digestive tract against toxins in fecal waste, says Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs."

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm, also known as Indian elm and red elm, has been used as a natural remedy in North America since the 1700s. The dried bark of this tree is ground and used in supplements that are available in pharmacies and health food stores. According to James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," slippery elm reduces inflammation of the digestive tract and helps to move waste out of the colon.

Marsh Mallow

Although most people in North America associate the name "marsh mallow" with puffy confections roasted over a campfire, true marsh mallow is an herb that has been used in natural healing for over 2,500 years, says Castleman. According to Dr. Balch, this herb loosens mucous and stool in the intestine, promoting better bowel movements and keeping the colon clean. It may also control acidity in the colon and promote healing of colonic tissue.
