Teaching proper technique is important when introducing young players to the fundamentals of football. Not only do you want to teach players the proper way to block, tackle, pass, catch and run, but you also want them to do it with safety in mind. Several training aids can help coaches teach the game of football to youngsters.
Blocking Sled
A blocking sled is a useful tool for football players at all levels. The sled has spots for three to five blockers to hit a blocking pad and move the sled backward. There is also a spot for you to stand and observe your players as they block. Observation is important because you can immediately correct players when you see mistakes and help them learn to block in the correct manner. The sled will move when the players use the correct blocking technique, so they get feedback from the movement of the sled as well as from their coaches during the drill.
Tackling Dummy
You want to teach your players the most effective way to bring down their opponents and do it in a manner that is safe. Coaches teach a player to lead with his shoulder and wrap up with his arms. Players can practice this on a tackling dummy that has sand at its base. The dummy topples over when hit properly. Young players may be fearful when asked to tackle in games, but they should not have any fear when hitting a piece of equipment with their shoulder providing the driving force.
Passing Machine
A passing machine will throw pass after pass to a team's receivers without tiring out the quarterbacks or the coaches. The passing machine has two motorized wheels, and you can set the distance and the speed of the pass. Passes come out in perfect spirals and help receivers work on their confidence, hands, coordination and ability to bring the ball in without dropping it. A passing machine is similar to a baseball pitching machine used in batting practice.
Agility Ladder
The agility ladder is a horizontal rope ladder with five to eight rows of holes for players' feet. The rope holes are 8 to 12 inches off the ground. When you blow a whistle, players move through the ladder, lifting their feet high in the air with each step. This exercise teaches players to get their knees high when they move and helps them build agility and remain balanced in challenging game situations.
