The early signs of hair loss--a receding hair line and an increase in loose strands of hair in your brushes, combs and on your pillow--will cause stress in most men. There is very little you can do once your hair is gone, but fortunately, if you catch hair loss in the early stages you can prevent it from progressing. Altering your diet to include vitamins that promote strong, healthy hair will help a little, but by far the most effective thing you can do is take a drug called finasteride. The drug prevents hair loss by blocking the formation of a specific type of testosterone--called dihydrotestosterone (DHT)--that weakens hair follicles and causes most male pattern hair loss.
Step 1
Ask your doctor for a finasteride prescription. The most well known brand name for finasteride is Propecia; another name is Proscar. Proscar typically comes in larger doses than Propecia because it is generally prescribed to shrink the prostate. Proscar is much cheaper per milligram of finasteride, however, and you can use a pill cutter to chop the pills down to appropriate, Propecia-size doses.
Step 2
Take your finasteride pill as prescribed. The drug has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for long-term use, so you won't have to worry about losing your hair as long as you have access to the medication.
Step 3
Take daily supplements of B complex vitamins. B complex vitamins help your body to metabolize and form new proteins--processes that are necessary to grow healthy hair.
Step 4
Increase your consumption of dark green vegetables to get more vitamin K, another vitamin that helps your body to build proteins.
Step 5
Increase your consumption of foods that contain vitamin A, which promotes healthy skin and hair. You can obtain vitamin A from foods such as mangoes, apricots, kale, turnip greens, cantaloupes, carrots, liver, pumpkin, spinach and sweet potatoes. Too much vitamin A can be hard on your liver, so it is best to avoid a highly concentrated supplement.
