A positive attitude can benefit you in more ways than you expect. Experts believe that a good attitude and health go hand-in-hand--and that being able to laugh about what life throws your way can significantly improve your chances for a better life.

Better Health

People with a more positive attitude tend to be healthier, according to Carol Ryff, a psychology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in an article for USA Today. This is because feeling good lowers pain, reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease and hastens healing time. The article also points out that feeling good often reduces inflammation, speeds up recovery and leads to a stronger immune system.

Less Stress

A good attitude lowers stress, which has an impact on both your physical and your mental well-being. It can also help you deal with everyday annoyances and problems. For example, rather than stressing over a traffic jam, you could use the time to make a better plan, such as leaving earlier the next day, so it doesn't happen again. Or use the time to listen to a CD, practice deep breathing or call a friend you've been meaning to catch up with. Looking at the bright side of a situation can significantly improve your mood and reduce your stress level.

Better Future

According to a study published on the Cigna website, people who have a positive attitude are more likely to return to work after an injury and less likely to quit because of chronic pain. They are also more likely to live longer and experience less physical pain overall throughout their lives. Being positive also improves your social life and makes you more likely to engage in social activities, form friendships and have a support system in place. In the long-term, this means an enhanced quality of life and stronger relationships.
