Skin irritations can be caused by a number of factors, including weather and humidity changes, pet hair, sunburn, parasites, medication or allergic reaction to foods, soaps, shampoos or clothing materials. However, there are a few natural remedies that can help to address the symptoms of skin irritation. Though many people claim these remedies work, they have not been approved by the FDA for effectiveness.
Pears and Cream
The mixture of pears and cream is a common home remedy for dry, irritated skin, as the mixture can help to soothe the skin while evening the skin tone and adding essential moisture. To use pears and cream on your skin, remove the fruit from its skin of one-half of a very ripe pear and place it in a small wooden or glass bowl. Add two tablespoons whole-milk cream and mash with the tines of a fork. Apply the mixture to the affected area and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and pat dry. Unused portions of this mixture will keep for about five days if covered and stored in the refrigerator.
Cornstarch and Aloe Vera Gel
Combining cornstarch and aloe vera gel can help to reduce itching and irritation, redness and inflammation on the surface of the skin. Cornstarch is a common folk remedy used to relieve itching, and aloe vera gel has been proved to reduce irritation and inflammation in cases of minor burns and prolonged sun exposure. To use cornstarch and aloe vera gel on the skin, mix three parts aloe vera gel to one part cornstarch in a small, non-metallic bowl. Apply the mixture to the affected area gently and leave the mixture on for 30 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and pat dry.
Burdock Root Oil
Natural burdock root oil can be applied to itchy, irritated skin, and it is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to help to reduce the severity of rashes. Burdock root oil is widely available through health food stores and stores that specialize in homeopathic or Ayurvedic medicine.
Evaporated Milk and Oatmeal
The combination of evaporated milk and oatmeal is a common home remedy for everything from dry, irritated skin, eczema, and psoriasis to oily, inflamed skin. To use evaporated milk and oatmeal on irritated skin, add eight ounces of evaporated milk and one cup of natural oatmeal to a bathtub that is half-full with lukewarm water. Get in the tub and continue filling it with lukewarm water. Soak in the tub for 30 minutes before rinsing the skin with cool water in the shower.
Lemon Juice and Vitamin E oil
Lemon juice and vitamin E oil is a common folk remedy for irritated, inflamed skin and potential bacteria buildup, and it is often used in Ayurvedic medicine, as well. To use lemon juice and vitamin E oil, mix two tablespoons of lemon juice with six tablespoons of vitamin E oil in a small, non-metallic bowl. Apply the mixture to the affected area and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and apply moisturizer, if you wish.
