4 Ways to Treat Hookworms

1. Take an Anti-parasitic Drug

If you contract hookworms, your doctor probably will prescribe several days' worth of mebendazole or albendazole to clear the infection. These drugs also will kill the remaining larvae and parasites. Your doctor will ensure the drugs are working with regular stool samples. These drugs cure almost all cases of hookworms, and are a first line of defense in countries that don't typically have parasitic diseases due to poor sanitary conditions.

2. Eat More Protein and Iron

Anemia is a common complication of hookworm infections. If your bout with the parasite was difficult, your doctor may recommend that you get more protein and iron in your diet from meat, nuts or meat substitutes like tofu. If you don't have a healthy diet, your doctor may recommend over-the-counter iron supplements. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables while you recover from your infection so that you can remain healthy and regain the weight you lost due to the parasites.

3. Forgo Treatment

If you live in a country in which hookworms are common and people often get reinfected, you probably won't receive any treatment for your infection unless it becomes serious. The only thing you can do is move to a community with sanitary conditions, or be more proactive about your cleaning habits. Call a doctor once you detect any new rashes on your body.

4. Avoid Reinfestation

Even if your doctor treats you for hookworms, the infection won't clear if you don't eliminate or get away from the source of the parasites. Move to a community with a good sanitary sewer system. If this is not possible, wear shoes in areas that may have hookworm infestations and avoid swimming in infested waters.
