Femcon Fe is a medication in a classification of drugs known as oral contraceptives. Femcon Fe is a combination oral contraceptive, which means it is made up of two different hormones--norethindrone (progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). This medication works by inhibiting ovulation and altering the lining of the uterus and consistency of cervical mucous to prevent pregnancy. Femcon Fe may be chewed or swallowed whole. For best results, the pill should be taken at the same time each day. Many side effects associated with Femcon Fe are mild and should resolve after taking the drug for a few months; more serious side effects should be addressed by a physician.

Menstrual Irregularity

Some women taking Femcon Fe may experience menstrual irregularity. Light spotting or bleeding between periods, an absence of menstruation, or an alteration in menstrual flow can occur. These side effects usually diminish after a few months, as the body adjusts to the pill. According to the manufacturer, taking Femcon Fe at the same time every day will help decrease the chance of spotting or bleeding.

Breast Changes

Breast changes such as breast tenderness, pain, enlargement and secretion can occur while taking Femcon Fe. These side effects usually lessen over time as the body adjusts to Femcon Fe.

Vaginal Discomfort

Women using Femcon Fe may experience vaginitis or a vaginal yeast infection. Vaginitis is a redness and inflammation of vaginal tissue which can lead to pain and discomfort. A vaginal yeast infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of yeast known as Candida. Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include redness, burning, discomfort, pain with intercourse and a thick white discharge. Any of the above-mentioned symptoms should be brought to the attention of a physician.

Headache and Dizziness

Headache and dizziness can occur while taking Femcon Fe. These side effects may be temporary until the body adjusts to the hormones in Femcon Fe. If headache becomes bothersome, a physician should be notified. He may recommend the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen for the relief of headache pain and discomfort. Severe headache accompanied by visual changes, weakness and numbness on one side of the body may be a sign of something serious and should be reported to a doctor immediately.
