VisitBoston.com describes Boston as a "welcome contradiction." Boston represents much of America's history, while hip restaurants, shows and tours and sporting activities firmly root the city in the world of today.

Embrace History

No trip to Boston is complete without an ample dose of history. Walking some or all of the Freedom Trail is a must-do; popular sites include the U.S.S. Constitution, the Bunker Hill Monument, the Paul Revere House, the site of the Boston Massacre, the State House and Boston Commons. Numerous sites such as Bunker Hill and the State House provide free access, while others, such as the Paul Revere House, have a charge.
Another way to experience Boston's history and architecture is to take a Walk to the Sea. A self-guided online map provides visitors with a path to follow through part of historic Boston down to the wharf, beginning at Beacon Hill, according to Visit Boston.

Whale Watch

The New England states are recognized for beautiful coasts and exciting activities such as whale watching. Several companies offer whale watching in the Boston area and along the coast; some allow a free second ride in the event no whales are spotted. Visit Long Wharf for a high-speed catamaran whale watching tour. Or head north of the city for whale watching, craft shops and small town cooking. Head south for whale watching if you want to take in Cape Cod, visit Plymouth Rock or spend some serious time on the beach, according to Visit Boston.

Arts and Culture

Boston boasts a number of cultural institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Harvard Art Museum, and the Boston Public Library. Groups like the Boston Symphony provide a superior musical experience, while acts like the Blue Man Group provide music, comedy and an overall unforgettable experience, according to Visit Boston.
Free, on-street performers bring culture in some of Boston's main shopping districts, specifically the Faneuil Hall outdoor Marketplace. Experience a piece of Boston at the Boston Public Garden, where you can pedal around the pond in a swan boat.

Catch a Tour

Various groups offer guided tours of historic sites such as the Freedom Trail. Lunch and dinner cruises from the harbor provide a romantic view of the city. The DUCK Tours feature amphibious vehicles and are a fun way for the entire family to view the city, according to Visit Boston. Walking tours are even available for those interested in a self-guided experience. Download files for your MP3 player from the City of Boston website.

Catch a Game

Boston is home to a number of professional sports teams and legions of fanatic fans. If you love sports, check out a game during your visit and experience the adrenaline generated by Boston fans. Boston is home to the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and New England Patriots. Fenway Park, where the Boson Red Sox play, is noted by Visit Boston as "America's most beloved park."
