When making the switch from a manual, traditional razor to an electric razor, the differing motions may seem strange. You'll need to employ different techniques in order to get the best shave possible when using an electric shaver versus your old method of shaving. Preparing for your shave, using the right motions, and performing the proper aftercare can ensure that you enjoy a close and comfortable shave with the convenience of electricity.

Prepare Your Face

Before you touch your razor to your face, prep your hair and skin to make it easier and more comfortable to shave, suggests Mercury Shaver Centre. Facial hair is coarse, and it benefits from softening to allow the razor to cut through it more easily. Soften your facial hair by applying a hot moist compress to the area. The heat and water will render the hair softer. Wet a washcloth with the hottest water you can comfortably stand, and hold the washcloth to your face for five minutes.

Find the Grain

Electric razors work best when going against the grain. Rub your skin to detect which way the hair is growing; you'll be able to feel the difference between going with the grain of your beard, where it feels smooth, and going against the grain, which will feel prickly. When you apply the electric razor to your skin, move it against the grain so that the hair is raised and cut as closely to the surface of the skin as possible. If you have extremely sensitive skin or are prone to ingrown hairs, shave with the grain until your skin and hair becomes accustomed to the electric razor.

Shaving Motion

The motion that you use with an electric razor varies depending on the type of electric razor you have. A straight-head foil razor has two bars that run straight across the top of the razor, where the foil blades are located. Best for longer hair, a foil electric razor should be pulled against the grain in smooth, straight motions, according to Grooming Tips for Men.
If you own a rotary electric razor, where the head has three circular blades that spin, you'll need to apply the razor to your skin in a circular motion. A rotary razor is better for everyday use on shorter hair, but take care not to go over the same spot too many times as it can create irritation.

Aftercare

It's important that you clean your razor with a small brush, usually included in your electric razor kit, after each time you use the razor. Carefully clean the foils or rotary heads. Hudson's FTM Resource Guide notes that you should lubricate the blades regularly with the included oil from the manufacturer. Do it just before shaving for the best results.
When you're done shaving, avoid alcohol-based aftershave. Instead, use warm water to rinse your face, and, if needed, apply a moisturizing cream.
