Milk thistle is an herb, which grows naturally in various areas in the Mediterranean region. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, milk thistle has been used for over 2,000 years to provide medicinal benefits. Today, it is most often used to treat liver problems and to improve the condition of people who have viral hepatitis. Super Milk Thistle is simply one type of milk thistle in capsule form, made by the brand Enzymatic Therapy. Though there are many benefits of using milk thistle, there are also several side effects and risks associated with its use.
Gastrointestinal Distress
One of the most common side effects of using milk thistle is gastrointestinal problems. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that milk thistle tends to have a laxative effect, so it can cause diarrhea, bloating, stomach cramping and a general feeling of pain in the stomach area. Not everyone who uses milk thistle experiences these problems, but it is something to be aware of and discuss with a physician before taking milk thistle.
Medication Interaction
Unsafe medication interactions are another common side effect reported from using milk thistle. Milk thistle is known to interact with antipsychotic medications such as haloperidol and chlorpromazine, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. It can also decrease the effectiveness of Dilantin, which is used to control seizures. Allergy medications, anti-anxiety drugs and blood thinners will all be less effective when taken with milk thistle. Anyone on a medication should talk to their doctor before trying milk thistle.
Allergic Reactions
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, people sometimes experience allergic reactions as a side effect from using milk thistle. Anyone who has an allergy to ragweed, marigold or daisy plants is at high risk for an allergic reaction to milk thistle. Though allergic reactions to milk thistle usually only cause skin rashes, it's best to be safe and not use milk thistle if you have any plant allergies.
Harm to Babies
The possible effects of using milk thistle during pregnancy or while breastfeeding are currently unknown. This is because very few studies have actually tested milk thistle on the pregnant or nursing population. Since milk thistle could possibly harm babies, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that all pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid it. The University states that milk thistle alters hormone production and can also increase risk of certain cancers in some people. Since nursing and pregnancy already alter hormone levels, it's best not to take any additional risks.
