Self-confidence describes the degree to which you believe in your ability to achieve certain outcomes. It is your sense of personal competence within varying scopes of activity. How you approach matters of importance throughout life heavily relies on your level of self-confidence in each moment. You can deliberately enhance this quality through following a systematic course of self-discovery.

Past Achievements

Everyone has overcome certain challenges in his life. The first step to developing higher levels of self-confidence is to recognize the obstacles over which you have already prevailed. Malcolm S. Forbes, late publisher of "Forbes" magazine, said, "Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are." Often, your self-perception can become distorted, due to a lack of accurate feedback from others. However, reflecting upon previous success illuminates your strengths and creates the mental conditions necessary to build self-confidence.

Break Tasks into Smaller Pieces

When committing yourself to the completion of an unfamiliar task, you can lose confidence if you try to manage too many details at once. Instead, break your goal down into small, achievable milestones. This lets you stack many moderate successes, one on top of the other. As you begin to build a stronger skill set, these minor achievements become concrete evidence of your ability to perform.

Increase Your Goals

The next step in developing higher levels of self-confidence requires that you increase your goals. In order to create a higher vision of yourself, you need not only to appreciate your minor achievements, but also to apply yourself to ambitions worthy of your efforts. Without attempting to accomplish anything of value, you might develop a belief that your ability to succeed only applies to minimal tasks. Now that you have built a solid foundation of positive expectancy, through the achievement of many smaller goals, you will find it much easier to target those objectives that matter most.
