Alpha Hydroxyl Lotions

Alpha hydroxyl acid is found in fruit and milk sugars. Also known as AHA, alpha hydroxyl acid is an ingredient in specifically made lotions, creams, toners and gels used to return moisture to the skin while increasing collagen production and stimulating blood circulation. Treating the skin with alpha hydroxyl lotions helps to soften wrinkles, diminish spots due to sun damage and aging and generally improve the overall appearance of the skin. Alpha hydroxyl lotions are available in both natural and synthetic forms and are composed of either citric acid coming from fruit or malic acid coming specifically from apples. Other AHAs are derived from lactic acid found in milk products or glycolic acid found in sugarcane.
Alpha hydroxyl lotions remove dead cells found on the epidermal surface by penetrating the skin and eradicating damaged cells. This action also triggers collagen production, the building block for new skin tissue. As a skin repair formula, alpha hydroxyl lotions can be highly effective when used properly.

What to Look for

When shopping for an alpha hydroxyl product, look for a lotion, cream, toner or gel. Your selection should depend on your skin type. If you have dry skin, a lotion or cream will penetrate more effectively. If your skin is oily, use a toner or a gel-based product. Read the label thoroughly and select a product with an AHA level of 10 percent or less and a pH level of 3.5 or more. Before purchase, do a skin test by applying a small amount of the product behind you ear to test your sensitivity to the product.

Common Pitfalls

Using alpha hydroxyl lotions, creams, toners or gels can increase the risk of sunburn, which can lead to skin damage. Your skin will become more sensitive with the application of an AHA product, so be especially careful to apply a strong sunblock when outdoors. Wearing a hat also helps to keep the sun's rays off your face. Some people can have allergic reactions to alpha hydroxyl lotions, with symptoms of redness, rashes, itching or discoloration. Consult your dermatologist before purchasing an AHA-rich product. If you have an adverse reaction, discontinue use immediately. When applying alpha hydroxyl lotions, do so according to directions. Never overapply, and use only as indicated.
