The skin around your eyes can affect people's perceptions of you, and a combination of dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles can make you appear old and tired, warns the Mayo Clinic. There are dozens of eye cream products designed to help improve the appearance of the skin around your eyes. Look for products with specific active ingredients that are proven to help improve skin health.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K1, also sometimes called phytomenadione, is found in many eye skin care products. It's ideal for those with dark under-eye circles. It helps to contract the veins on the surface of your skin---surface veins are one of the common causes of darker skin near the eyes---for a brighter look, according to Columbia University's Health Services.
Hyaluronic Acid
For plumper and smoother skin around your eyes, nothing is as effective as hyaluronic acid, says Jeannette Graf, M.D., for Elle magazine. It instantly hydrates skin to diminish the appearance of wrinkles.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is one of the best vitamins for skin wrinkles and blemishes. Various forms of vitamin A in eye skin cream can reduce the size of the wrinkles around the eyes, and can also help smooth and even out skin tone, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, is especially useful in combating tired-looking, aged skin when applied in an eye cream that combines it with vitamin K.
Caffeine
Caffeine may help to quickly reduce puffiness around your eyes. It's best in day creams that you apply when you get up for a more awake, alert look. Caffeine's effects are temporary and puffiness may return, especially if the swelling is caused by environmental factors like allergies.
Neuropeptides
Neuropeptides may help encourage collagen production for younger-looking skin that's smoother and less wrinkly, says Nichola Perricone, M.D., for Elle magazine. Its effects are similar to that of vitamin A products but it is more gentle, making it better if you have very sensitive skin around your eyes.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 may reduce the size of very fine wrinkles around your eyes, reports the Mayo Clinic, and can also defend the thin, sensitive skin from the damaging effects of the sun. The clinic says it has no harsh side effects, making it perfect if you have sensitive skin.
