Depilatory creams use a chemical process to remove unwanted hair from the body. They provide an alternative to laser hair removal, plucking, waxing or shaving. The process can be performed at home and is relatively simple. Depilatory creams are available in various formulas to allow for specialized use.
Chemical Process
Depilatory creams use chemicals such as sodium thioglycolate and calcium thioglycolate. These chemicals dissolve the portion of the hair shaft that rests right below and above the surface of the skin.
Use
When you are ready to use the depilatory cream, simply apply it to the area where you would like the hair removed, such as the bikini area, arms, underarms or legs. Some creams can also be used on the face, but a gentler product that is designed especially for facial use is required. Allow the cream to sit on the skin as directed by the manufacturer, and then wipe it off. Leaving the cream on longer than recommended can cause skin irritations. If the skin starts to burn or sting, remove the cream immediately.
Advantages
Depilatory creams are normally painless and easy to use. The cuts and nicks that are associated with shaving are avoided, and the hair will grow back slower because it was removed more deeply than with shaving. The hair does not grow back darker or thicker. Compared to specialized salon services, such as laser hair removal or waxing, depilatory creams are relatively inexpensive.
Warnings
Although the chemicals found in depilatory creams are often strong-smelling, they are usually safe and painless. However, the chemicals may irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction in people with allergies or sensitive skin. When first using the cream, apply a small portion to a small area of hair to perform a patch test. If the skin becomes inflamed, red or itchy, discontinue use immediately. Never use the product near the eyes or on skin that is already irritated, has an open cut or is scratched.
Availablilty
Depilatory creams can be found in a variety of formulas, including those for facial hair or sensitive skin as well as those that contain perfumed products or extra moisturizer. Depilatory products come in aerosols, powders, roll-on creams, gels and lotions. They can be purchased over the counter at nearly any store that sells general grooming products, including large discount stores and drug stores.
