A persistent cough, whether it's caused by an infection, allergies or environmental sensitivities, can be disruptive to restful sleep as well as everyday activities. Meanwhile, over-the-counter cough suppressants have been shown via a 2001 study published in the British Medical Journal to be no more effective than placebos. Evidence is mounting that some home remedies may be a better alternative. Remember to consult with your doctor, however, if your cough is accompanied by fever or other symptoms.

Honey

A 2007 study in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine indicated that a single dose of buckwheat honey was more effective than over-the-counter products in soothing children's coughs. It's a remedy worth trying for adults, too. Take a teaspoon of honey straight from the spoon, or mix equal parts lemon juice and honey mixed with hot water. Do not give honey to children under one year old.

Peppermint and Menthol

Peppermint's active component is menthol, which is recognized as an effective cough suppressant by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Try menthol lozenges, preferably without sugar or artificial sweeteners. Or drink peppermint tea as needed; use 2 tbsp. dry leaves per cup of hot water or use commercial tea bags.

Elecampane, Licorice and Eucaplytus

The Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine suggests making a decoction of elecampane, licorice and eucalyptus. These three herbs soothe the throat and broncial tubes. Place abut 20g of dried elecampane root, 5g of licorice root, and 5g of eucalyptus in a saucepan and cover with 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup 2 to 3 times a day.
