You can use exercise balls in a variety of ways to exercise and tone the abdomen. Common types of exercise balls include the physio ball and medicine ball, but other versions, like the physio egg, may better meet your needs and abilities. Always do your research before choosing a new exercise accessory to add to your routine.

Physio Eggs or Rolls

Perfect for individuals with balance problems or children who want to start exercising their abs, a physio egg or roll provides the same benefits as a physio ball but makes balance a little easier. Unlike the traditional physio ball, the oval shape of the egg, and the cylindrical shape of the roll prevent them from rolling side-to-side. This enables you to perform crunches, sit-ups and twists without worrying about the lateral movement of the ball, allowing you to improve your balance slowly over time.

Physio Ball

The benefits of performing exercises on a physio ball are numerous. According to Healthy U, using a physio ball will target your core, improve balance and coordination, improve posture and promote muscular balance. The effect of the ball moving in any direction at any time requires you to engage your entire core throughout every movement and improve overall abdominal strength.

Medicine Balls

A medicine ball is a small weighted ball that ranges in weight from as few as 2 lbs. to as many as 25 lbs. Easy to grip and hold between your hands, medicine balls allow you to increase the weight and difficulty of your ab exercises. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, medicine balls also allow you to perform plyometric-style exercises, increasing the power, endurance and flexibility of your entire upper body. Start light in order to prevent back strain, and work your way up to heavier weights.
