Swelling or fluid retention in the upper and lower eyelids can result from allergies and environmental irritants, crying, high blood pressure, sinus infection or simply fatigue. Puffy eyes are usually of minor concern as far as health goes, though you should check with a doctor if you're pregnant, diabetic or have more than occasional bouts of swelling. In the meantime, there are several effective home remedies at your disposal.

Cucumber Slices

This is perhaps the best-known home remedy for puffy eyes: place thin slices of a cucumber fresh from the icebox over your eyes and relax for five to 10 minutes. The temperature helps bring the swelling down while the moisture of the cucumber rehydrates the area.

Tea Bags

The tannins in tea, either black or green, help to reduce the swelling around your eyes by constricting blood vessels. Chamomile tea also works well. Steep the tea bags as usual, drain, then let them cool down until they are comfortable to handle. Lay one bag over each eye and relax for five to 10 minutes. You can also put the tea bags in the refrigerator until chilled and then use them as a cold compress.

Potato

Thin slices of potato, used as a compress, act as an anti-inflammatory on puffy eyelids. Place a slice over each eye, and relax for five to 10 minutes.

Spoons

Place two ordinary metal teaspoons in the refrigerator. When they're cool, place them over your eyes, bowl side down. The spoons act as a cold compress for the eyes.
