Supplements to Treat Acne

Acne is a skin condition characterized by lesions, often called pimples, on the face, neck, back and chest. Some people begin noticing acne lesions as early as age 12, and this skin condition can persist for as little as a few years or for as long as three decades. Acne has several causes, including hormone changes, overactive oil glands, dirt and toxins. In addition to proper cleansing, there are supplements you can use to help control your acne. Consult your doctor before starting a supplement regimen.

Basil

Though it is best known for flavoring Mediterranean dishes, basil may help reduce the severity of acne outbreaks, says Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." It is an immune system stimulant, and supplements containing this herb may help control bacteria that can worsen acne symptoms.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral that contains antioxidant enzymes that prevent cell damage, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A supplement containing selenium may help increase skin elasticity and prevent acne lesions from forming scar tissue, notes Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing."

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil is essential for skin health, particularly if you experience frequent acne outbreaks. According to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," flaxseed oil contains essential fatty acids that keep the skin soft and smooth. The gamma-linolenic acid in flaxseed oil also repairs damaged skin cells and dissolves pore-clogging fatty deposits.

Garlic

Garlic capsules fight bacteria that can clog pores and cause acne lesions, says Dr. Balch. This supplement also bolsters the immune system, warding off illnesses that can sap your body's resources and keep it from protecting your skin.
