Dark under eye circles are a persistent nuisance for many people. Lack of sleep can occasionally cause temporary dark circles that disappear after adequate rest, but no remedy exists that will completely eliminate chronic under eye circles that are genetic and occur as a natural part of aging, according to the Mayo Clinic website. However, there exist many approaches to hiding or reducing their appearance, including concealer creams, vitamin K gels and laser surgery.

Under Eye Concealers

Numerous under eye concealer creams exist that use concepts of the color spectrum to help conceal dark circles. Dark circles usually appear blue or purple, and by using a concealer from the other end of the color spectrum, such as peach or yellow, the colors may neutralize each other other, according to RealSimple.com. The recommended application approach consists of multiple steps, starting with an under eye moisturizer to plump up the skin, followed by application of the concealer using a makeup brush. Dabbing the concealer with fingers helps to blend it. Finally, an application of translucent powder helps hold the look.
Under eye concealers that receive top ratings from "Ladies Home Journal" testers include the Lola Concealer stick, Lancome Effacernes Concealer and Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K may lighten the skin, according to ConsumerResearch.com, and it may strengthen capillaries and act as an anti-swelling agent, according to InformedBeauty.com. Many newer eye creams and gels contain vitamin K to help reduce dark circles. One recommended gel is Jan Marini Factor-A Eyes for Dark Circles, which contains vitamin K as well as retinol, which may help promote the growth of collagen, hiding dark capillaries.

Laser Surgery

ConsumerResearch.com reports that most experts believe that dark circles cannot be completely lightened with any treatment short of laser surgery. Dark circles have many causes, and according to the Facial Plastic Surgery website, not all are candidates for laser surgery. Both hyperpigmentation and excessive vascularization under the eye may be effectively treated by laser surgery. Superficial vessels can actually be removed by the laser.

Other Approaches

The approach to dealing with under eye dark circles will vary depending on the cause of the problem. Simple remedies can include getting more sleep and giving up tobacco products. Improved diet and general overall health can also improve the under eye appearance, according to the Facial Plastic Surgery website. More intensive interventions can include chemical peels for hyperpigmentation under the eyes and intense pulsed light for hyperpigmentation or vascularization.
