Cracked heels, which may look like small cuts in the heel area, can be caused by shoes with open heels or dry skin. Cracked heels may become red and painful, particularly if they are infected. In most cases, cracked heels do not require the care of a doctor and can be treated at home. If cracked heels are severely painful, consult a podiatrist.
Soak the Feet
Soaking the feet in warm water will help add moisture to the heels and the dry, cracked skin, says podiatrist, William Van Pelt, D.P.M. Fill a large basin with warm water, then place your feet in the water to soak them. Soak the feet for 20 minutes per night right before bed, recommends Dr. Van Pelt. Soaking the skin may not be effective if lotion is not applied to the skin immediately after removing your feet from the water to keep he moisture sealed in.
Moisturize and Cover
After soaking your heels, liberally apply a moisturizer, suggests the Foot and Ankle Center of Washington. You can purchase a moisturizer that coats and penetrates the skin at the drugstore or grocery store. If you don't have a moisturizer on hand, you can also use petroleum jelly to coat the heels, says Dr. Van Pelt. After applying the moisturizer, place a pair of moisture barrier socks over the feet and wear them overnight. You can purchase moisture barrier socks at the drugstore or obtain them from your podiatrist.
Spray Bandage
If you have particularly painful fissures on your heels, apply a spray bandage to protect them. You can buy a spray bandage at the drugstore or grocery store. Clean the heels with soap and water, then dry them and apply a spray bandage to keep out germs and help the area heel, suggests the New Zealand Dermatological Society.
Heel Strapping
If cracked heels are particularly severe and painful, your podiatrist may recommend heel strapping, says the Foot and Ankle Center of Washington. The podiatrist straps the heel by applying a layer of tape to help the skin fuse together and heal. Additionally, your podiatrist may use a tissue glue to carefully reattach the fissures in the heel.
