Pregnancy is undoubtedly an experience filled with multiple changes, both emotional and physical. Every change requires an adjustment from the expecting mother. Weight gain is a change that every pregnant woman endures during the course of pregnancy. While weight gain is a normal and healthy part of pregnancy, it can also prove to be a burden once the baby is born. There are numerous programs designed for postpartum weight loss.
Yoga
Yoga is often a popular postnatal method of losing weight and engaging in exercise. Yoga is a low-impact activity that focuses on developing balance and strength. The added weight acquired during pregnancy often causes a shift in the center of balance within the body; yoga is a gentle way of centering the balance. It is also relatively easy to progress as the new mother becomes more comfortable with poses and gains more experiences.
Walking
Walking is another activity that is popular among women who have just given birth. Walking helps to build endurance and provide energy, both of which are beneficial to any new mother. An added benefit of walking is that it is an activity that the individual can do at their own pace and include other family members in as well. As the mother develops her athletic ability, she may progress to jogging or running or develop a fitness program combining the three.
Diet and Nutrition
Nutritional intake is an important factor in postpartum weight loss. Extreme diets and fad diets are not recommended for women in the postpartum phase due to the ongoing shift in hormones taking place within the body. A balanced diet high in protein and rich in vitamins and minerals is usually endorsed. Breastfeeding mothers should take special care to monitor their nutritional intake, as it will affect the nutritional content of their breastmilk. All mothers should consult their physician before any change in diet. Healthy weight loss should be gradual.
Micellaneous
Mothers interested in exercise and weight loss should also look for programs that incorporate the baby as well. There are several programs for mom and baby that promote both bonding and weight loss. Examples include yoga, stroller walking and swimming.
