Wrinkles around the eye are usually the result of sun damage. The sun's ultraviolet rays break down the collagen in the skin, causing it to age prematurely. Collagen is what makes the skin smooth and tight. Once collagen becomes damaged, crow's feet, wrinkles and fine lines form around the eyes and the skin loses its elasticity. There are a number of treatments that can reduce eye wrinkles.
Botox
Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a bacteria that is injected in the area around the eye. According to the Mayo Clinic, botox inhibits muscle movement and blocks chemicals that are released by nerve cells. When the muscles around the eye are unable to move, you are less likely to develop wrinkles. Only a cosmetic surgeon or trained medical professional can administer Botox treatments.
Eye Creams
There are a variety of products that promote anti-aging effects by diminishing and smoothing eye wrinkles. Eye creams that contain vitamin A, CoQ10 and alpha hydroxy acid repair skin damaged by the sun, especially around the eyes where wrinkles and fine lines appear. Vitamin A, CoQ10 and alpha hydroxy acid generate new skin-cell growth and repair collagen damage. Eye creams make the eye area appear wrinkle-free and smooth by tightening the skin. Most eye creams are available over-the-counter at department stores, cosmetic retailers or drugstores.
Cosmetic Surgery
For eyes that are extremely wrinkled, cosmetic surgeries, such as eye lifts, may be an option. An eye lift eliminates fine lines and wrinkles by tightening and pulling the skin that surrounds the eye. There are risks associated with cosmetic surgery. Since there are muscles around the eye, nerve damage is one risk that should be considered. An eye lift should be performed by a licensed cosmetic surgeon with a strong track record of doing this type of surgery.
Natural Treatments
Natural treatments are free of all artificial ingredients or chemicals. Placing avocado and banana under the eyes can naturally hydrate and tighten the skin. While applying the mask, be sure to close your eyes to prevent the ingredients from getting into your eyes. Leave the mask on for several minutes and then rinse with cool water. Puffiness can be reduced by placing a wet green tea bag underneath the eyes. Polyphenol, a natural ingredient in tea, is known to diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Drinking water regularly also softens and hydrates the skin.
Warning
Since the area around they eyes is very delicate, caution should be used when performing any type of eye treatment. Before beginning any type of treatment, you should consult with a licensed cosmetic surgeon, dermatologist or medical doctor. Not every treatment is right for everyone. Wearing sunglasses and UV protection and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun is the best defense against eye wrinkles.
