Historic French Lick, located in the rolling hills and woodlands of Southern Indiana, offers a variety of options for a health-inspired visit. Whether you are searching for a relaxing vacation or rigorous outdoor exercise, you'll find it. French Lick is a resort community, offering two historic hotels that were visited by many of the elite during the early part of the 20th Century, including Al Capone, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Louis Perrin.
Hiking
Numerous trails are available for hiking. Twelve miles of trails are offered at French Lick Resort, while the Hoosier National Forest offers 266 miles of trails for hiking, backpacking, cycling and horseback riding. Scenic trails offer glimpses of historical architecture and the resort itself, along with opportunities for wildlife and nature viewing. The national forest adopts the "Leave No Trace" philosophy, encouraging visitors to help maintain the health and beauty of backcountry areas. Whether you are searching for a low-impact hike or vigorous trek, you will find your desired trail type. Hiking is an excellent cardiovascular workout, and can even increase your HDL levels.
Spas
Two spas are available in French Lick, each offering numerous services for pampering and tranquility. For over a century, people have traveled to the area for the springs, and Pluto baths are offered using the spring's mineral water. After hiking or cycling, a visit to either spa can alleviate the soreness of the muscles and stress. Both spas offer wraps, facials, scrubs, baths and massages along with other services. Receiving a massage at one of the spas can alleviate stress and anxiety, control your blood pressure, relieve pain and stiffness and leave you feeling deservedly pampered, according to Mayo Clinic staff. The spas offer Swedish, aromatherapy, stone, foot and couple's massages.
Cycling
Cycling trails are offered in abundance throughout the area. Bicycles and helmets are available to rent, as well. As with hiking, there are trails ranging in length and terrain. Cycling through the town of French Lick is also popular due to the architecture and historically-rich area.
Golf
Several courses are available in French Lick among the rolling terrain. Golfers are able to play courses designed by Donald Ross, Pete Dye and Tome Benedelow. Courses range from nine hole, Scottish-link style and others. One of the courses is set at one of the highest elevations in Indiana, with views that can spread for 40 miles.
Dining and Local Foods
From local farmer's markets to fine-dining establishments, French Lick offers a large variety of dining options. The French Lick Farmer's Market is held weekly mid-May through mid-October and offers plants, plant starts, locally produced treats and foods, crafts and other items.
