Diarrhea is defined as significantly looser stools in a child, with increased frequency. Dr. Sears explains that when a child's bowel movements increase in frequency by one and a half to two times, it is considered significant. Diarrhea can occur in toddlers for many reasons. It is usually not cause for concern unless the child becomes dehydrated, difficult to arouse, loses weight or if the child has bloody diarrhea. If they have any questions, parents should contact their pediatrician for medical advice.

Infections and Parasites

Several infections can cause diarrhea in toddlers. Rotavirus is a common culprit which contributes to diarrhea. It frequently occurs during colder months and is very contagious, easily making its way around daycare centers and preschools. Bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella can also cause diarrhea, and may be contracted through contaminated hands or food. Parasites, such as giardia, can cause extended cases of diarrhea. These parasites are most commonly acquired through contaminated water while traveling to other countries, or anywhere clean drinking water isn't present.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are given to kill harmful bacteria which have caused illness. Unfortunately, antibiotics are not specific to only killing bad bacteria, and they often wipe out much of the good bacteria present in the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. Diarrhea and general stomach upset can result due to this imbalance in the intestines.

Food Intolerance

One of the most common food intolerances is to dairy products, due to the lactose it contains. Food intolerance occurs when the body has difficulty digesting certain foods. Gastrointestinal issues such as gas, nausea, pain and diarrhea typically occur when intolerance is present. In children, it is also possible for sugar and food coloring to cause intolerance.

Allergies

Food allergies are different from food intolerance, but allergies can also cause diarrhea. Unlike food intolerance, diarrhea which is the result of an allergy is also accompanied by other symptoms like a rash or difficulty breathing.

Juice

Toddlers who drink a lot of juice may experience diarrhea. Some juices work like a laxative, like apple juice and prune juice. The high sugar content of juices can also lead to diarrhea in some toddlers.
