If you are lost or stranded, having some basic survival equipment may save your life. Before you head out on a trip through a remote area, pack the necessities. For example, carry a GPS device that will allow you to contact emergency responders. If that is not an option, bring a flare gun and an emergency whistle. Also, bring a quality first-aid kit.

Tents

Shelter from the elements is vital if you are in a region with extreme temperatures. A quality tent will keep you dry and help you avoid overheating or freezing. For example, if you are in a region with extremely cold weather, a tent will keep you out of direct wind, which will help you maintain a safe body temperature while you sleep. Tent manufacturers design tents for specific weather conditions, so buy a tent that matches the conditions of the region to which you are traveling. Before using the tent, prepare its material according to the manufacturer's specifications. For example, many tents require waterproofing treatment with special chemicals before you can use them outdoors.

Firestarters

Whether you need to cook food or get warm, a good firestarter is an important piece of survival equipment. From simple solutions, such as waterproof matches and lighters, to more complicated equipment, such as a flint-and-steel spark generator, a quality firestarter will help you build a fire quickly in a pinch. Choose your firestarter based on the conditions you plan to use it in. For example, matches are a poor choice for windy or wet regions.

Water Purifiers

If the water you find is contaminated, you need to purify it. Water purification methods include chemical purification, filtering and boiling. Chemical purification requires iodine or chlorine, which you dissolve in contaminated water. After several minutes, the chemicals kill dangerous organisms, such as bacteria, parasites and viruses. Filtering devices strain the water, removing contaminants. Boiling water requires the use of a large cup or bowl that can withstand high heat. Bring the water to a boil. Let it continue to boil for at least a minute to kill all bacteria, viruses and parasites. Many camping-supply stores sell water-purification equipment. Choose the highest quality device you can afford. If you know the region in which you will use your water purifier, make sure your device removes all the contaminants you are likely to encounter.

General Tools

Carrying some basic tools with you may help you in unpredictable situations. For example, if an important piece of equipment breaks while you are in the backcountry, having the right tool to fix it can save your life. Multitools, such as pocketknives that contain numerous small tools and devices, are good choices because they offer you many tool options and still fit in your pocket. If a vehicle breakdown is a potential problem, bring a tool kit that matches the sizes of the screws and bolts of your vehicle. Other tools include saws or hatchets for firewood collection and shelter construction.
