Dental Wax

With many more adults wearing braces to correct misaligned teeth, there have been enormous advances in dentistry, making it easier to straighten teeth and provide more comfort during the time that braces are worn. Dental wax is one development that has made it possible for people with braces to avoid pain and soreness inside their cheeks and lips. Dental wax is used on the brackets of braces to prevent them from rubbing against the inside of the mouth's delicate tissue. Strips of dental wax are created to fit between the braces and gums, whereby the metal cannot scratch or cut the inner mouth, especially when chewing food. Dental wax has helped thousands of brace-wearing adults and children return to a normal diet by taking away this type of pain. Dental wax is also used by dentists to create a mold for designing false teeth. Soft dental wax is ideal for taking impressions, as it provides a clear picture of the teeth. As a malleable substance, it conforms to teeth, allowing dentist to make an accurate impression of the top and bottom teeth when making dentures. Dental wax is also used for filling caps and crowns.

What to Look for

Dental wax generally comes in strips. To apply dental wax to your braces, remove a strip, roll it into a ball and then press it firmly on the wire brackets found on the braces (as well as anywhere else where you experience rubbing or discomfort). Make sure you buy dental wax that sticks properly and is easy to remove. Dental wax should not break apart or fall off your braces until you are ready to remove it. Dental wax comes in mint and other flavors, is inexpensive, and easy to carry as the packages are small enough to fit inside a purse or a pocket.

Common Pitfalls

Be sure to remove your dental wax often. You must remove the wax before brushing your teeth. Brush carefully around the braces and brackets, as food particles can collect in the areas between them and your teeth. If these particles are not removed thoroughly, you can experience tooth decay. Always floss after brushing to insure thorough removal of debris.
