You will see several types of grips among professional golfers --- weak grips, strong grips, and neutral grips. Some use overlap grips, and some use interlocking grips. But despite all of the differences in their grips, these players have something in common. They all maintain constant, relaxed grip pressure throughout their swings, which translates into power and accuracy.
Relax Your Grip Pressure
If you grip the club too tightly, you will cause tension to run from your hands into your arms and shoulders. This will destroy the natural swinging motion of the club, and cause power leaks and misdirected shots. One way to soften grip pressure is to think of the grip as a tube of toothpaste. Use just enough pressure to hold on to it, but not enough to squirt the toothpaste onto the ground.
Maintain Constant Grip Pressure
It's not enough to relax your grip pressure at address --- you have to maintain a constant degree of relaxation throughout your swing. If you tighten your grip at impact, you will prevent the natural rotation of your hands, and misdirect the ball to the right. If you soften your hands at impact, you will tend to flip your hands and club face to the left, and hit a hook. Consistent grip pressure equals consistent golf.
Left Hand in Control
If you are a right-handed golfer, you will have a tendency to overpower your left hand. Control the club with the fingers of the left hand, and keep the grip pressure of the right hand slightly less than the pressure of the left hand. This will allow energy to flow from your shoulders, down your arms, through your hands, and into the golf shot. The right hand just goes along for the ride.
