Avon is one of the most well-known cosmetics brands in America. Along with makeup, the company also offers a variety of skin lotions. Each of Avon's Skin So Soft lotion formulas contains slightly different ingredients, so you should know the specific ingredients of each if you have allergies. The original Skin So Soft body lotion consists of a number of ingredients, each performing a specific function in the mixture.
Water
The primary ingredient in Avon's Skin So Soft body lotion is water. The high water content allows the lotion to maintain a liquid form. The water combines with the oil ingredients to form a creamy lotion. Since oil and water do not normally combine well, Skin So Soft contains other ingredients that keep the mixture stable.
Emulsifying Agents
Emulsifying agents work to maintain the mixture of ingredients in Skin So Soft body lotion. Without these ingredients, the water and oils in the lotion would separate. Some emulsifying agents in Skin So Soft are steareth-20, cetearyl alcohol, steareth-2, carbomer and ceteareth-20.
The surfactant polysorbate 80 works along with the emulsifiers to maintain the mixture of oils and water in the lotion.
Skin Conditioners
Humectants are skin conditioners that moisturize your skin by drawing moisture from the air around you. This increased moisture affects the top layers of your skin and improves its surface appearance. Humectants present in Skin So Soft body lotion are glycerin and saccharomyces lysate extract.
Emollients improve the surface appearance of your skin by lubricating it. Ethylhexyl palmitate and dimethicone are the two emollients in Skin So Soft body lotion.
Occlusive skin conditioners form a protective barrier on your skin that holds water in. Jojoba seed oil, glyceryl stearate and caprylic/capric triglyceride are examples of this ingredient.
Other skin conditioners in Skin So Soft body lotion include shea butter extract and botanical ingredients, such as amaranthus caudatus seed extract.
Vitamins
Avon Skin So Soft body lotion contains retinyl palmitate, or Vitamin A, and tocopheryl acetate, or Vitamin E. Vitamin A improves the appearance of your skin, while Vitamin E works as an antioxidant to prevent the lotion from deteriorating when exposed to oxygen.
Other Ingredients
Skin So Soft also contains a variety of other ingredients. Among these is aluminum starch octenylsuccinate, which thickens the consistency of the lotion. To keep the lotion fresh, it contains preservatives such as methylparaben, disodium EDTA and propylparaben. Imidazolidinyl urea inhibits the growth of microorganisms and kills any that are already in the lotion.
