Darts is a recreational game often played in taverns and basements. It is also a competitive game that tests an individual's aim and hand-eye coordination. Dart tournament winners walk away with money and awards, while the winners of other dart games get bragging rights. Either way, players must follow the rules.
Dart Board Height and Distance
In order to hang a dart board correctly, the bull's eye of the dart board must 5 feet, 8 inches from the floor. The throwing line on the floor should be 7 feet, 9-1/4 inches from the front edge of the board. When throwing darts, the dart thrower can put his lead foot right up to the edge of the foul line. The player's upper body can lean over the line, but the foot may not cross the line. If the player loses balance and steps over the line during the follow-through, the throw is a foul, and the points accumulated do not count.
Official Dart Board
The official dartboard has a bull's eye in the center and 20 numbered sections that are equal in size. Each of the numbered sections is divided into four sections. Two of the sections for each number are worth single points, one is worth double points and the other is worth triple points. If the player is throwing for 20-point section and it lands in the triple-point section, the throw is worth 60 points. If a dart lands in the bull's eye, the throw is worth 50 points.
Padded Walls and Carpeted Floors
It is very important to hang the dartboard in an area that has padded walls and carpeted floors. This protects your walls and floors from the points of the darts, and it protects the dart points from damage by concrete walls or floors.
