Candida albicans is a naturally-occurring fungus in females that is normally present within the digestive tract, mouth, vagina and along the skin. Under certain conditions, such as pregnancy or normal hormonal fluctuations, this fungus or yeast can grow more rapidly than usual. As a result, affected females can develop yeast infection symptoms.

Vaginal Itching, Redness or Swelling

Females who develop a yeast infection can experience unusual vaginal itching, redness or swelling. Certain women may also experience a burning or painful sensation along the outside of the vagina. These yeast infection symptoms in females can be uncomfortable and typically persist until affected women receive appropriate treatment.

Vaginal Discharge

A yeast infection can cause women to develop unusual vaginal discharge. Affected women may notice that their vaginal secretions appear abnormally thick, white or lumpy. Vaginal discharge may be profuse and can emit an unpleasant or yeast-like odor. This yeast infection symptom can be embarrassing, especially when affected women engage in sexual activities. This yeast infection symptom typically persists until a woman receives antifungal treatment. Females who develop any type of unusual vaginal discharge should receive further evaluation and care from a medical professional. Abnormal vaginal discharge can also be a sign of alternate medical problems, such as bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted disease.

Pain During Intercourse or Urination

Vaginal irritation and inflammation caused by yeast overgrowth can result in vaginal discomfort in certain women. As a result, affected women can experience sensations of pain during sexual intercourse or urination. These female yeast infection symptoms typically accompany sensations of vaginal itching or burning. Women who experience pain during sexual intercourse or urination should seek additional medical care as these yeast infection symptoms can also be signs of a urinary tract infection.
