It doesn't matter if you are a native Miami resident or first-time tourist: Miami has a wide range of fun activities and places to offer that differ from the stereotype of late-night club scenes and celebrities. Miami has natural beauty and wildlife reserves, museums and historical art districts, and marine sports promoting a fun and healthy lifestyle.
History
Miami is the youngest major city in the United States, although the area was inhabited 10,000 years ago and called Mayami. In 1821, the United States incorporated the city of Miami into the state of Florida and it has been a popular tourist destination ever since. Its history is part of its appeal, and visitors can take in the country's largest grouping of art deco-inspired buildings in the city's art district. Another popular piece of history is Miami City Hospital, also known as "The Alamo," which opened in 1918.
Time Frame
The best time to visit Miami depends on what you want to do -- there is no bad time. Winter temperatures averages between 62 and 75 degrees F, making it great for golfers and outdoor adventurers. Summer temps are typically between 77 and 89 degrees, so the beach and pool are the highlights and diving and surfboarding reign. Summer also can bring hurricanes, so keep an eye on the forecast before you visit.
Geography
The city of Miami covers only 36 square miles, making it the smallest of any American city with a population of more than 2.5 million. It is 12 feet above sea level and has a naturally protected harbor thanks to the surrounding islands in Biscayne Bay. Miami is bordered by Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park.
Outdoors
The year-round warm weather of Miami makes it a prime location for outdoor activities. Many parks offer free yoga sessions and have marked walking trails, and many waterfront areas have manatee-watching areas. Bayfront Park is located on 32 acres of greenery and has walking, biking and jogging trails. Greynolds Park in the north of the city offers birdwatching trails and kayak rentals along the water, as well as butterfly route and animal observation points.
Top Features
Miami's beaches are world famous. Publications such as "USA Today" and networks such as the Travel Channel cite them as among the best in the world. Areas such as South Beach beach have concession stands on the boardwalk, water sport rental shops, volleyball courts and on-site lifeguards. Many, like South Point Park beach, also have picnic areas and fishing spots.
