Competing in triathlons requires gear and equipment for swimming, biking and running. The equipment required for biking can be the most expensive, but it can also be the most important. Specialized triathlon bikes--also called "tri" bikes--are characterized by a steep seat tube angle of 76 to 78 degrees and a short top tube. The best triathlon bikes will also combine aerodynamics and lightweight materials to maximize power output and speed.
Cervelo P3
Cervelo has produced some of the best triathlon and time trial bikes since 1995, and the P3 is at the top of the list. The P3 won "Best of Show" at the 2004 Vegas Interbike Show and is considered to be a "superbike" by Bike Sport Michigan for its lightweight materials and aerodynamics. A two-position seat post, curved seat tube and narrow head tube combine to improve the aerodynamics. The P3 comes in six sizes and can be difficult to size. Components on the P3 include Shimano Ultegra 6700 or Shimano Dura-Ace 7900.
Cannondale Slice
Cannondale bikes can be seen at bike races from the Ironman to the Tour de France, and the Cannondale Slice triathlon bikes are among the best. According to the Road Bike Review website, the Cannondale Slice triathlon bikes provide a fast, smooth ride by efficiently transferring power to the pedals. Smooth shifting makes it easy to switch gears on hills or curves while the carbon frame keeps weight to a minimum. Despite the lightweight construction, the frame is strong enough to withstand the toughest riding conditions. The Slice bikes have been tested and improved in third-party wind tunnels to improve aerodynamics and design.
Trek Speed Concept
Trek is a leader in the biking industry, and the Speed Concept series of triathlon bikes is the top of the line. Available in five models, including two carbon models, the Speed Concept bikes were originally designed for professional riders and triathletes. John Burke, president of Trek, said that the Speed Concept bikes combine three years of design, engineering and development. According to the Bike Rumor website, the design, engineering and development provide superior aerodynamics and construction to produce one of the best triathlon bikes.
