Natural Ways to Get Rid of Sinus Infections

Sinusitis occurs when the hollow passageways around the sinuses develop an infection. More than 32 million American suffer from sinus problems, according to MotherNature.com. Signs of infection include thick drainage, congestion, swelling and pressure around the eyes, and there may be a loss of smell and taste.The causes of sinusitis include viral infections, nasal polyps and allergies. The Mayo Clinic reports that most cases of acute sinusitis do not require medical intervention, and home remedies are recommended.

Steam

Inhaling steam by putting the face several inches above boiling water and draping the head with a towel will allow the sinus passageways to become moist, and may relieve some sinusitis symptoms. Steaming should be performed for 15 minutes up to three times a day. A hot, steamy shower will also aid in sinus relief. MotherNature.com advises taking two hot showers a day for sinus relief. Humidifier should be placed next to commonly used areas, such as the bed or couch, to contribute additional moisture to the air. Humidifiers should be cleaned once a week to avoid mold from growing.

Nasal Lavage

Cleansing of the nasal passageways using a neti pot or a bulb syringe is a natural, quick remedy recommended by the Mayo Clinic. Water or saline solution is poured into one nostril and then rinsed back out. MotherNature.com suggests mixing 1 tsp. of table salt and 2 cups warm water to create a homemade saline solution. The procedure is then repeated in the other nostril side.

Fluids

Drinking fluids increases sinus drainage, according to the Mayo Clinic, and may offer relief. Avoiding caffeinated drinks such as colas and coffee is essential because these beverages can increase dehydration. MotherNature.com suggests to drink hot teas made of fenugreek, fennel or anise which may aid in decongestion.

Elevation

The Mayo Clinic recommends to elevate the bed about six inches so that mucus drains out of the sinus passageways during sleep or rest. This can be done by placing two wooden blocks under the headboard to elevate the bed, or by using extra pillows to prop up the head. Another temporarily solution is sleeping in a reclining chair.
