Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are typically caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. HSV-1 infection leads to fluid-filled blisters that appear on or near the mouth and sometimes on the chin or in the nostrils, according to the Mayo Clinic. The virus responsible for this infection does not have a cure but there are home remedies effective in easing the discomfort associated with the blisters.
Witch Hazel
Applied topically, witch hazel can relieve pain and help dry the cold sore blisters. This solution can be applied several times a day using a cotton ball. MotherNature.com suggests that rubbing alcohol can dry the blister, like witch hazel.
Protection
Protecting the blister from irritation, such as the wind or sun, can prevent more blisters from cropping up. A sun or wind burn in addition to the blister itself can be extremely painful. Options for protecting the blister include petroleum jelly and sunscreen.
Emollient Containing Products
MotherNature.com recommends using an over-the-counter product that is made with an emollient. These type of products can prevent cracking and will soften scabs. Some products are marketed specifically as cold sore remedies, but emollient creams found at home can also be used. Examples include those that contain phenol, camphor or aloe.
Ice
Ice can reduce inflammation. Place an ice cube or cube wrapped with a thin cloth onto a blister for a few minutes to reduce redness and dull some of the pain. This method isn't likely to speed healing time but it can make coping with the blister easier.
Zinc Oxide
Zinc oxide is the active ingredient found in many diaper rash creams. The University of Maryland Medical Center points out that applying this cream to herpes blisters can speed the healing time compared to no treatment at all.
