A tandem bicycle has two sets of pedals, two seats, and two sets of handlebars to allow two riders to share in the experience of riding a single bike. When sharing a tandem bicycle, the front rider steers, while both riders have the opportunity to contribute to the ride by pedaling.

Social and Recreational Benefits for Couples

The two riders on a tandem bicycle share the riding experience differently than riders using separate bicycles. While tandem bicycles have a traditionally romantic image attached to them, any two riders can share a tandem bicycle ride. The shared effort and experience can strengthen bonds and rapport between romantic couples, parents and children, or just good friends.

Cooperation and Team Building

The two riders on a tandem bicycle strengthen their abilities to work as a team. This teamwork allows a stronger, faster cyclist to help the slower cyclist achieve higher speeds. If one cyclist has significantly more endurance than another, they can boost the distance that the other normally travels. If either cyclist gets tired, the other can take over for short periods while the other recovers. Both riders pedaling together can pool their strength to overcome hills that would otherwise slow and tire a single person.

Disabled Cycling

If you or someone you know wishes to enjoy the benefits of cycling, but can't due to a disability, a tandem bicycle can help. A rider unable to pedal or maintain their balance can rely on the other rider to accomplish these necessary aspects of bicycling. Visually impaired riders, or those who are hard of hearing, might normally put themselves at risk of accident or injury on a bicycle, but the second rider can help them to avoid obstacles and hazards.
