Indoor cycling is an excellent way to reap the benefits of a regular exercise program in your own home. In addition, indoor training is an excellent way to stay in shape during the winter, the off-season or when weather may close local trails and roads. There are a variety of options available for those who wish to cycle indoors, whether at home or at the gym.
Indoor Cycles
Usually found at the gym, cycles built for group classes are also available for individual purchase. Typically, these bikes are used in group class settings at gyms, with an instructor leading a group of indoor cyclists. These bikes closely simulate a regular road-style bicycle, but some riders may find them a bit uncomfortable at first. They may have built-in computers that measure distance, speed and cadence. The user is able to adjust difficulty by adjusting the resistance applied to the front wheel by felt or rubber pads. In addition, some bikes offer clipless pedals, allowing riders to wear custom cycling shoes.
Upright Stationary Bikes
Upright stationary bikes are the customary indoor cycling bikes. They are generally more comfortable than bikes built for indoor group cycling classes and offer a wide, cushioned seat. It is standard for these bikes to have a computer interface with programmed workouts. Some bikes may also have built-in heart-rate monitors. These bikes are less like a real bike as compared to a group cycle bike, but they offer the same benefits of regular exercise. They are classified as low-weight-bearing and very low-impact.
Recumbent Stationary Bikes
Recumbent bikes are another form of stationary bike. These bikes offer comfort by allowing the user to sit in a reclined position with feet directly in front. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests these bikes may offer relief for those who suffer from knee or back pain on regular or upright bikes. If maintaining balance while riding is an issue, recumbent bikes are an excellent option. Generally, these bikes offer a similar interface to those seen on upright stationary bikes.
Indoor Trainers
An indoor trainer is an excellent option for those who already own a own bike. It lifts the back wheel onto a drum, holding the bike in a stationary position. As the rider pedals, the wheel rotates on the drum, creating resistance. Resistance can be controlled by adjusting magnets within the drum, or simply pedaling harder. Indoor trainer systems are compact, easy to use and can be used with any style of bike. Trainers are a great way to save money on buying a stationary bike or a gym membership.
