Acne can be difficult to clear up, despite the many over-the-counter and prescription acne creams available. Furthermore, the active ingredients in some of these treatments may create even more skin problems, such as dry, red, itchy and irritated skin. Some alternative medicine experts believe that essential oils can clear up acne as efficiently and safely as commercial products, without the harmful side effects. Consult with a dermatologist or health care professional before using an essential oil to treat acne.

Neroli

Neroli essential oil is a natural option for acne treatment. Neroli has a sweet, citrus scent and is extracted from the white flowers that bloom on bitter orange or Seville orange trees. According to "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty," by Roberta Wilson, neroli is appropriate for all skin types. It has a regulating effect on oily skin that is thought to aid in the treatment of acne. It is generally thought to be safe for use on sensitive, dry and irritated skin. It is also reputed to be effective in the treatment of scars, therefore it may help prevent acne scars.

Patchouli

Patchouli essential oil is another acne treatment option. According to "The Aromatherapy Bible," by Gill Farrer-Halls, this essential oil is distilled from the leaves of the patchouli shrub, which grows in India, China and the Philippines. For acne treatment, patchouli is thought to help control and regulate the production of oil to clear existing acne and prevent new break-outs. Patchouli is also reputed to have anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce the swelling and redness that sometimes accompany severe acne. Like neroli oil, patchouli is thought to be effective in scar treatment and can be used to fade old acne scars.

Ylang Ylang

A third natural essential oil option for acne treatment is ylang ylang. This essential oil comes from the flowers of the cananga tree that grows in Madagascar, Malaysia and Indonesia. According to "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty," ylang ylang is versatile enough to be used on all skin types, but appears to be especially effective in treating greasy, oily skin. Ylang ylang reduces oil production and fights bacteria to reduce and prevent the appearance of blemishes and acne. It has an overall smoothing and softening effect on the skin and is also thought to be effective in diminishing the signs of aging.
