Many women are interested in having larger breasts; this is clearly evident because of the steady increase in rates of breast augmentations. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentations went up 36 percent from 2000 to 2009 in the USA. In the UK, breast augmentations increased 275 percent from 2002 to 2007, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. However, many seek improvement of breast appearance without the expense, pain or potential risk of surgery.
Considerations
Because structures of the breast are positioned on top of chest muscles, exercises cannot actually make the breasts larger. The best option to improve the appearance of breasts through exercise is to focus on toning and strengthening the chest's muscular support, which will give improved posture and the appearance of slightly larger breasts.
Push-up
Lie prone on the floor, with hands flat about a foot outside the shoulders, elbows pointing skyward. Keeping the entire length of the body straight, push upward, with all weight supported by the hands and toes. Slowly descend back toward the floor without lying down and repeat, going up and down in a slow, controlled manner. Repeat 10 times, and do three sets. Do this a minimum of 3 times a week.
Chest Fly
Lie on your back on the floor, legs bent, knees skyward. With a small weight of 3 to 10 pounds in each hand, start with the arms straight up from the chest. Slowly lower the arms outward and down, keeping the upper arm aligned with the shoulder. Stop when upper arm is parallel to the floor, and straighten the arms back up to starting position. Repeat 10 times and three sets and a minimum of three times a week.
Chest Press
Lie on your back on the floor, legs bent, knees skyward. Gripping a lightweight bar of 3 to 10 pounds over the chest, hands about shoulder width apart, slowly lower bar to chest, elbows bending outward. Stop at the bottom, then slowly return to the top. Repeat 10 times, and do three sets a minimum of three times a week.
Other Options
Roger P. Smith, author of "Netter's Obstetrics and Gynecology," explains that hormonal responses within the body, including menstruation, pregnancy and nursing, all have enlarging effects, but unfortunately are also temporary. He says weight gain will add fat to the breasts but also cause overall body fat to increase.
