San Francisco offers much for family visitors keen on big-city adventure, but also bent on doing it the healthy, active way. Given the fact that the city is only 7 miles by 7 miles in size, it can readily be explored by foot or by bike. And, with its numerous outdoor attractions and crowded calendar of annual events, it's pretty much guaranteed that you never will have a boring moment in San Francisco.
Local Food
Finding good meal options that are both healthy and kid-friendly can be a pill when you're on the road, but thankfully San Francisco offers quite a few choices. And if your family follows a vegetarian or vegan diet, you will probably feel like you've gone to heaven. Pisces, in the Sunset district, is a good option. It uses organic, locally grown vegetables in all its meals, and offers a variety of pasta dishes as well as typical Californian cuisine--and has a kid's menu, to boot. For tasty Asian, head to Burma Superstar in the Richmond neighborhood.
Places to Stay
Energy-efficient climate control and recycling bins in all guest rooms are two of the perks at the Triton, an eco-friendly hotel that welcomes families--including pets. The Hotel Carlton is another green accommodation option; pets are provided for here in style, with animal beds made from organic materials.
Outdoor Activities
Take a tour of the harbor, including the island of Alcatraz, which used to house the famous prison. Spend a day at the San Francisco Zoo. Rent bicycles and explore the city's numerous landmarks, such as Golden Gate Bridge.
Spectator Sports
Major League Baseball fans can catch the San Francisco Giants in action at AT&T Park. NFL fanatics will want to schedule their visit to coincide with a home game of the San Francisco 49ers, who play at Candlestick Park.
Parks
Golden Gate Park is a massive oasis, rife with rolling hills, merry-go-rounds, windmills and gardens. Lincoln Park in the city's Richmond district provides stunning views over the city. Probably the best views, however, can be enjoyed from Twin Peaks, which is San Francisco's highest point.
Warning
Though not especially famous for its beaches, San Francisco does have quite a few nice ones that are worth visiting on pleasant days. However, swimming is not advisable--especially for children--as the coast in this area is notorious for potentially deadly rip tides.
