Good shooters have a certain confidence every time they walk on the basketball court. Some players who are new to the game seem to take to shooting quite easily and are productive from the start. Most players are not. Shooting is a skill that takes quite a bit of practice and concentration to build proficiency.
Jumping
One of the biggest keys to getting your shot off unimpeded is getting lift on your jump shot. This will also give you momentum as you start your shot, and it will allow you to get higher in the air than your opponent. Go straight up when you jump to shoot the ball accurately. You want to come down in nearly the same spot. Shoot the ball just before you get to the peak of your jump.
Grip
Place your shooting hand directly under the ball. Your fingers should be spread apart so you are holding the ball in a balanced manner. Place the ball on the tips of your fingers and not deep in the palm of your hand. Your finger tips should be just underneath the long black seams that run under the circumference of the ball. Place your guide hand on the side of the ball in order to help bring it into the shooting position.
Shooting the Ball
Your elbow needs to be directly underneath the ball. Raise the ball so it is at the level of your forehead and don't bring the ball back so it is behind your head. Keep the ball in front of you at all times. In order to get the ball to fly straight at the front rim, your shooting hand should extend directly at the target. The ball should come off your hand with an even rotation, spinning evenly as it flies toward the rim. Point your index finger directly at the target as the ball comes off your hand.
