According to Skincare Physicians, the red marks left behind by acne are not technically scars. They are damaged tissue that also can be pink, purplish or brown depending upon your natural skin tone. Eventually they will fade, but it can take months and some have reported them lasting well over a year or longer. Understanding the treatments to rid you of these red marks quickly is vital for selecting the correct one for you.

Preventative Treatments

In general dermatologists advise wearing sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage. Specific to red acne scars, the sun can darken the marks making them more visible and requiring more time to heal. Apply an oil-free sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher to prevent further irritation to already damaged skin.

Bleaching Creams

Skincare Physicians recommend using a cream with hydroquinone. Over-the-counter treatments can contain up to 2 percent of hydroquinone, and it is recommended to look for these. If the product doesn't denote how much hydroquinone it contains, it's better to not waste your money and look for one that does. Be sure to follow instructions very carefully as misuse can cause permanent skin discoloration. Dermatologists can prescribe a stronger strength if needed and will provide you with the proper use instructions.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion uses fine crystals to scrape away at the skin's most top layers. This helps to slough off dead skin cells and promote the rejuvenation of new skin underneath. Multiple treatments may be required to completely diminish the red spots, removing layer by layer. If using a home kit, be cautious of overuse as that can lead to further skin damage. Follow instructions and allow the skin to heal in-between treatments.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels work under the same philosophy as microdermabrasion. A chemical is applied to the affected skin area that removes the top layers of skin. This forces the skin to heal itself without the damage causing the dark pigmented skin. Several treatments may be required to completely fade the acne red mark.

Pulsed Dye Laser

Dermatologists can use a pulsed dye laser to help treat red acne scars. The yellow light of the pulsed dye laser aids in removing scar redness. The laser penetrates to the underlying skin, which forces it to produce collagen, a natural substance that promotes healthy new skin cells.
