Long, luxurious hair is known as a woman's crowning glory, however hair loss may still pose a threat to this beauty trademark of so many. Hair loss is caused by certain factors such as genetics, medication, stress or fungal infection of the scalp. Treatment for hair loss should be started immediately for best results, according to the American Hair Loss Association. A dermatologist can prescribe medications or creams while some hair care practices can help stimulate new hair growth and stop excess shedding.
Step 1
Wash your hair daily with baby shampoo. Baby shampoo is gentler on hair and helps prevent hair fall out without leaving heavy residue behind that can weigh hair down. Pat hair dry with a clean towel after cleansing and apply a gentle spray on conditioning detangler to lock in moisture.
Step 2
Allow hair to air dry naturally. Heat from blow dryers damages the hair follicle and causes hair to break and shed. Air drying your hair will help hair retain moisture and keep it healthy, while preventing excess hair loss.
Step 3
Eat two to four servings of protein enriched foods such as fish and poultry. Cells responsible for proper hair growth and health require protein for cellular formation and health. One serving of protein equals 3 to 4 ozs., meeting the serving requirements set forth by the FDA food pyramid.
Step 4
Take cimetidine acid reducer one to two times daily. Cimetidine is primarily used for indigestion and stomach ulcers, however, according to the American Hair Loss Association, it has been shown to block excess androgen hormone production that leads to hair loss in women. Taking prescription contraceptive pills has also shown effectiveness.
Step 5
Allow your hair to hang freely. Pulling the hair back in pigtails, buns and braids can cause a condition known as traction alopecia according to Family Doctor.org. Traction alopecia occurs when stress is put on the hair follicle from tight hair styles, slowly breaking the hair and causing balding. Free flowing locks are less likely to break and shed when styled.
