Not only is acne a painful and troublesome skin condition, but it can leave unsightly scarring on the affected areas. While adhering to practices such as maintaining proper hygiene and not picking pimples and zits is the best way to avoid acne scars, it is common for them to surface over time. There are several ways to address embarrassing scars that include both medical and natural remedies.
Laser Treatment
Speak to a skin doctor, known as a dermatologist, about laser resurfacing. This practice uses a laser beam to remove portions of the top layer of skin and heat up the skin beneath. New skin will form as the areas treated with the laser heal. Although the scar lesions may not completely disappear, they may appear less noticeable to the naked eye. Check with your health insurance policy before moving ahead to see if this procedure is covered.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is another medical procedure that is often available through both dermatologists and health spas that offer other facial treatments. Dermabrasion removes the top layer of skin using a rotating wire brush. It may completely remove surface scars and make deeper scars less noticeable.
Surgery
While surgery is considered the last medical option, dermatologists may use it for deep and severe scarring. An out-patient procedure called a punch excision cuts away individual scars and the areas are then stitched or a skin graft is used to repair the hole that remains.
Tissue Fillers
Consult your dermatologist about using injections of collagen or fat for reducing the appearance of acne scars. Tissue fillers help to fill out or stretch the skin and present a smoother surface appearance.
Sandalwood Powder and Rose Water
Sandalwood powder and rose water, both of which are available at holistic markets or spas, are often used as home remedies for treating acne scars. Make a thick paste using 2 tsps. of sandalwood powder mixed with rose water. Spread the paste on the acne scars and leave it overnight, rinsing your face with cold water the next morning.
Juices and Vegetables
Several vegetables and juices are known for their positive effect on acne scars. They work by tightening up the loose pores, increasing skin elasticity or acting as an antioxidant that nourishes damaged skin. Try blotting your face with cucumber juice, lemon juice or fresh tomato slices. Wait for about 15 minutes after each treatment and rinse with cool water.
Plant Extracts and Oils
Try a natural plant extract such as rose hip seed oil, aloe vera or lavender oil. These treatments encourage skin regeneration and act as anti-aging agents. Place a small amount of the oil or gel on a cotton ball and gently massage onto the scars two times per day. Wash your face after 10 minutes or leave on overnight to treat deeper scars.
