The term "Swiss" ball was first used in 1965 in Switzerland by a group of physical therapists when they used a large ball in their therapy of cerebral palsy children. Now the big ball is also called a stability ball. Exercising on such a ball is convenient--it deflates easily and is portable. It is also adds an element of play to workout routines. Several benefits of using a ball to exercise include improved balance and posture, increased core strength and decreased back pain.

Balance and Posture

Ball exercise incorporates the added challenge of balance in every exercise. SpineHealth.com reports that over time, the muscles used to keep in balance on the ball become stronger. Posture is improved by increased spine stabilization. According to ACE Fitness, posture and balance improve by concentrating on strengthening the abdominal section with ball exercises.

Core Strength

Every exercise done on the ball incorporates core muscles, due to the stabilization of the core before working arms or legs. To stay on the ball, abdominal muscles need to be engaged. SpineHealth.com states that the ball helps strengthen and develop the core muscles that help stabilize the spine. ACE Fitness also recommends exercising with stability balls to develop the abdomen and back.

Back Pain

According to SpineHealth.com, the ball "is a conservative back exercise treatment option for back pain sufferers and is designed to help prevent further episodes of low back pain." The type of spinal movement used on the ball also may help decrease pain by stimulating the body to produce natural pain inhibitors.
