According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 90 percent of the hair on our scalp grows continually. We shed about 50 to 100 hairs per day, on average, which then is replaced by new hair from the same follicle. Scalp hair grows approximately half an inch per month. Hair loss can be a result of aging, stress, disease, sun exposure, pregnancy or using too much heat or chemicals. However, adding certain vitamins to your diet can promote healthy, strong hair growth.
Biotin
Biotin breaks down amino acids and encourages production of fatty acids. A deficiency may cause dryness or hair loss. You can get the dietary supplements at your local drug store or over the internet. Some food sources that contain biotin include carrots, cauliflower, salmon, bananas and liver. It is also effective topically, so look for hair products that contain biotin.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is effective because it improves overall blood circulation. Since blood carries nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, more of it reaches hair follicles on the scalp, promoting healthy hair growth. Rich sources of Vitamin E include almonds, hazelnuts, spinach, sunflower seeds and as dietary supplements. Hair care products that contain Vitamin E usually enhance shine and keep hair hydrated.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps to produce collagen that holds tissues together, and it also promotes a healthy immune system. Both of these are necessary for proper hair growth and hair loss prevention. A deficiency of Vitamin C may cause brittle hair and breakage. The best sources of Vitamin C are grapefruit, oranges, spinach, strawberries, peppers and tomatoes.
Vitamin D
According to Everyday Health, Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. Calcium encourages healthy hair growth, and a deficiency could cause dry, damaged hair. Vitamin D sources include cheese, milk, tofu and fortified cereals. It is also available in supplement form or in a multivitamin. Your body produces Vitamin D from exposure to natural sunlight.
