As men age, their stomach muscles naturally lose their tone and sag, contributing to the "beer belly" appearance so common among men in the Western world. Also, men tend to store fat in the abdominal region. According to the Ask Men website, getting sculpted abs is one of the most common goals of men who decide to take up weight and strength training. Target exercises can help you make your dream of ripped abs into a reality. Always consult a physician before starting an exercise regimen.
Russian Twist
According to the Men's Fitness website, the Russian twist is a popular choice for building core muscles and strengthening your abs. Start by sitting on the floor or an exercise mat with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Grab a weight or a medicine ball and hold it in front of your chest while you lean back so your upper body is at a 45-degree angle. Twist your torso to the right quickly. Twist it to the left, then back to the center. Work up to three sets of eight to 12 reps.
Weighted Crunch
A weighted crunch, unlike many other stomach exercises, targets the upper abdominal muscles. To perform this exercise, lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Grab a dumbbell with each hand. Stretch your arms above your head so your arms are flat on the floor. Tighten your pelvic and abdominal muscles to lift your upper torso off the floor. Your arms should stay parallel to your upper torso. Lower your arms and upper torso to the floor. Repeat eight to 12 times.
Corkscrew
The corkscrew works both the lower abdominal muscles and the oblique muscles. Start by lying on your back and lifting your legs so thy are perpendicular to your torso. Bend your knees slightly, and place your palms on the floor on each side. Lift your hips to bring your legs back toward your torso while twisting your hips to the right. Lower your hips to the starting position and repeat, twisting your hips to the left. Repeat this exercise eight to 12 times for each side.
