During the holiday season, New York City transforms, embodying the Christmas spirit in a way that delights tourists and residents alike. Whether you want to enjoy the outdoors or stay inside where it's warm, there are activities for everyone to enjoy. So bundle up, put on your walking shoes, and spend Christmas in New York City.
Mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral
One of the most beautiful Christmas traditions in New York City is the celebration of midnight mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. The Cathedral is located on Fifth Avenue, and it is the largest Gothic style Catholic cathedral in the United States. Midnight mass is presided over by the archbishop, and you must have a ticket because seating is reserved. Arrive early because the cathedral will be crowded.
Visit Santa's Workshop
Every year, Macy's department store creates Santa's Workshop: a lavish display of winter villages, elves, toys and of course, Santa's workshop. After walking along the path through the display, you'll end the journey at Santa's house, where you and your children, friends or family can have your picture taken with Santa. You can purchase a copy of the picture as a souvenir, or just walk through the gift shop. The line for Santa's Workshop can become very long, so arrive early in the day if you can.
Eat Out
If you visit New York for Christmas, you might want to make reservations at a special restaurant to celebrate the holiday. Park Avenue Winter (Park Avenue at East 63rd Street) is decorated to invoke the feeling of a winter wonderland. The Christmas meal is served from 1 to 9 p.m. Folks who prefer to eat downtown can make reservations at Tocqueville, where you'll find gourmet cuisine such as foie gras and house-cured bacon.
See the Tree at Rockefeller Center
Christmas wouldn't be complete without a trip to see the famous tree at Rockefeller Center. Walk around the plaza to take in the sheer size and beauty of the tree. Take pictures in front of the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center. Afterward, head to the Rock Center Cafe (which is level with the ice skating rink) and warm up with some hot chocolate. You can also have meals here, but know that the prices can be steep.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular
If you're looking for Christmas entertainment, purchase tickets to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The world famous Rockettes perform routines accompanied by a live orchestra. At the end of the show, live animals are marched on stage for the nativity scene. Ticket prices ranged from $45 - $250 in 2009.
