According to the Mayo Clinic, hormonal changes are the most common cause of acne, which is why it affects so many teenagers. While teenage acne can be a traumatic and stressful experience for many teenagers, there are home remedies that some claim to be effective for reducing the frequency and severity of breakouts. However, these remedies have not been approved by the FDA for effectiveness.
Berry Mask
A mask of berries that have high antioxidant levels and high concentrations of vitamin C can help to reduce pimples and create a more uniform skin tone. Combining 1 tbsp. of mashed strawberries, 1 tbsp. of mashed raspberries and 1 tbsp. of mashed blueberries is the most potent method, according to Alan C. Logan and Valori Treloar, authors of "The Clear Skin Diet;" however, you can use just one type of berry if others are unavailable. To use the mask, spread the mixture of the affected area and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing the skin with cool, clean water. Unused portions of the mask can be kept in the refrigerator for three to five days if covered.
Whole Milk and Lime Juice
The combination of whole milk and lime juice can be used as a cleansing face wash; the acidity of lime juice can help to remove bacteria while whole milk can add essential moisture to the surface of the skin. To use this combination, mix four parts whole milk with one part freshly squeezed or natural lime juice. Gently wash the skin with the mixture, rinse with cool water and pat the skin dry. Apply a regular moisturizer, if you use one, immediately after to seal in the added moisture.
Basil Tea
Basil tea is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to help cleanse the skin and body from the inside out. While consuming basil tea may help with acne, more benefits have been shown from placing brewed tea bags on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes in the morning and evening, preferably after drinking the tea. According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," brewed basil tea can help reduce inflammation while slowing excess oil production in light to moderate cases of acne.
Tomato Pulp and Honey
A combination of fresh tomato pulp and honey applied to the skin can help reduce pimples and inflammation according to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care." The tomato pulp can also help fight bacteria on the surface of the skin while the honey helps to even the skin tone and soothe irritated skin. To use tomato pulp and honey, combine 2 tbsp. fresh tomato pulp with 1.2 tbsp of raw, natural honey. Apply the mixture to the face before showering or washing the skin before bed. Leave the mixture on for 10 minutes and then wash as usual.
Almond Scrub
Almonds are a natural exfoliant, and can help reduce oil buildup on the skin while helping get rid of dead skin cells. To make an almond scrub, grind almonds in a mortar and pestle or food processor until they are the consistency of fine sand. Wet the face with cool water and gently scrub the skin with the ground almonds for 60 seconds. Rinse the skin with clean water and pat dry.
