Encephalitis is a pathogenic infection of the brain, usually caused by a viral--and sometimes bacterial--infection. According to MayoClinic.com, encephalitis can range in severity from a mild, flu-like illness to a serious, life-threatening condition. Fortunately, most cases of encephalitis are relatively mild. If you have encephalitis, you must be treated by a qualified medical doctor. Some people use holistic remedies--natural therapies which seek to treat the patient as a whole person--to treat symptoms of encephalitis. If you would like to try to a holistic remedy to treat your encephalitis, you should discuss it first with your physician, and then use a holistic method as a complement to medical care, not a replacement for it.

Step 1

Take 300 mg of St. John's Wort with meals 3 times a day. According to the Holistic Herbalist website, herbalists have found that a mixture of St. John's Wort--along with rosemary and ginkgo biloba--can be helpful in relieving the symptoms associated with viral encephalitis, including cognitive impairment, memory difficulties and visual and speech disturbances. According to the Mercy Medical Center website, studies done on animals suggested that St. John's Wort has the ability to fight bacterial and viral infections, but more study is required to show that it has the same effect on people. St. John's Wort can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight, as well as interact with prescription medication.

Step 2

Take 40 drops of tincture of rosemary twice a day to help support better concentration and memory while recovering from encephalitis. Rosemary also is used for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Step 3

Take 120 mg of ginkgo biloba extract twice daily to enhance memory and support clear thinking while you are recovering from encephalitis. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, ginkgo biloba improves blood flow to the brain, and may work to protect damaged nerve cells.

Step 4

Take 1/2 mg of melatonin daily. According to the Parkinson's Plus Information website, some animal studies suggest that melatonin may have protective effects against serious complications associated with encephalitis.

Step 5

Take 250 mg of astralagus standardized extract four times a day for immune support and antiviral activity, and to help with weakness and exhaustion. According to Herbs2000, the astralagus herb can raise immune system resistance and improve physical endurance.

Step 6

Consult with your holistic practitioner about the advisability of trying acupuncture for symptoms or complications of encephalitis. According to the University of Maryland Medical center website, a small study of people with complications from encephalitis suggested that scalp acupuncture could lesson severe complications and reduce symptoms.
