Herbs for Acne Scar Removal

According to skincarephysicians.com, heredity and the severity of the acne are the main determining factors in whether or not scarring will occur. Early treatment of acne can reduce the likelihood that scars will appear. There are also an array of herbs that alternative and holistic health practitioners believe are effective at preventing and reducing the appearance of acne scars. Consult with your physician or dermatologist before using an herbal remedy for the treatment of acne scars.

Lavender

Lavender is commonly used in essential oils, creams and lotions to treat a variety of skin problems. Lavender is thought to be effective in the treatment of acne itself and use can be continued to prevent future breakouts and to remove the scars left behind. "The Aromatherapy Bible," by Gill Farrer-Halls, recommends mixing one drop of lavender essential oil, two drops of neroli essential oil and 1 tsp. of calendula oil together and applying the mixture directly to acne scars twice daily to clear them up.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is reputed to be effective at balancing oily skin, treating acne and preventing acne scars. According to "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty," by Roberta Wilson, tea tree oil effectively treats acne without causing inflammation, irritation, dryness and itching of the skin like other acne treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide. Its antibiotic properties help prevent infection in acne lesions which can lead to scarring. "Herbal Medicine," by Dian Dincin Buchman, Ph.D., recommends applying a mixture of four drops of tea tree oil and 4 tbsp. of witch hazel and rosewater daily to clear acne and prevent scarring.

Aloe Vera

A third option for removing old acne scars is aloe vera. According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," by James F. Balch, M.D. and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C., aloe vera is known for its skin benefits and is available in creams and lotions. It is gentle on the skin and can be applied to scars daily. Products containing aloe vera can be found at most grocery stores and drug stores. In addition to treating acne scars topically, drink aloe vera juice to further promote the disappearance of scars and lead to more vibrant looking skin.
